Blog Action Day 2009: What are you doing? 15/10/09

Hey everyone!

Following a yearly tradition, this blog is participating once again in the Blog Action Day.

This last year was a turbulent period. We feel our world is going through a transition period – but more than a financial or economic transition, we’re going through a climate transition.

Climate change is not a supposition, it’s a fact – studies are already showing real results of this unprecedented changes. But how can we, developers, technology enthusiasts and students, help with this problem?

First of all there’s consciousness. We have to know what our impact is and what we can do to reduce it. Does your company use energy-efficient PCs and servers? What do you do with your old equipment and gadgets? Do you ship your apps with online documentation instead of paper manuals? Even small actions count here, such as shutting down your build servers when not in use.

And second and most important there’s action. After knowing your problems it’s time to create new solutions to solve our world’s toughest problems. Of course I’m talking about the…

In the past few years the Imagine Cup theme has included the environment; in France 2008 it was the main theme, and since then it’s included in the competition theme as a part of the 8 Millennium Development Goals.

We’ve been trying to do our part for the environment – both Ecologger and KnoWorld were very successful in IC08 and IC09, respectively. Now it’s your time! Create your winning solution in one of the five categories (Software Design, Game Design, Digital Media, Embedded Development and IT Challenge) or in one of the awards (TBA…) and get your chance to go to Poland and change the world in the process!

The world really needs your help – are you up to the challenge?

See you next time,

Roberto – @robertos_br

Quick tip : Silverlight Map Stats 11/4/09

Hey there!
Just a quick post to talk about a new Silverlight widget for sites and blogs: Map Stats!

Map Stats lets you display a map of your site’s visitors. Just add a small script and it will do all the work of counting, tracking and displaying in a DeepZoom (ArcGIS) map.

No registering, no logins, just this simple script and it’s all set:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://mapstats.net/Stats.ashx?Width=300&Height=200"></script>

I’m trying it on this blog (check the sidebar), let’s see how it will work out.

‘Till next time,

Roberto

This blog is now moving to English! 5/3/09

Hey there!

Following an interesting initiative from Andre Furtado’s blog, and adding up to the fact that I’m no longer living in Brazil, I’ve decided to change this blog’s first language to English. I believe most readers won’t have much trouble, and will even use this as a tool to practice their technical English (myself included!), but for those who prefer Portuguese it will still be available in most posts in the form of a machine-translated version (manually reviewed by me).

The first changes are of course the renaming of all categories and translation of some static parts in the template. These changes will happen over time, and might take some weeks to complete (depending on my free time primarily).

I hope this change will bring new readers to this little space and allow me to connect to my peers here in France and wherever else they might be. And of course, I hope this change is OK with you, loyal reader. If you disagree, please send in your comments!

See you soon!

Roberto

Este blog está mudando para inglês!

Fala pessoal!

Roberto

Pequenas mudanças no visual do blog: o que você achou? 14/11/07

Fala pessoal!

Hoje resolvi corrigir alguns pequenos problemas no design do blog.

Roberto
