Blog Action Day 2009: What are you doing? 15/10/09
Hey everyone!
Following a yearly tradition, this blog is participating once again in the Blog Action Day.
This last year was a turbulent period. We feel our world is going through a transition period – but more than a financial or economic transition, we’re going through a climate transition.
Climate change is not a supposition, it’s a fact – studies are already showing real results of this unprecedented changes. But how can we, developers, technology enthusiasts and students, help with this problem?
First of all there’s consciousness. We have to know what our impact is and what we can do to reduce it. Does your company use energy-efficient PCs and servers? What do you do with your old equipment and gadgets? Do you ship your apps with online documentation instead of paper manuals? Even small actions count here, such as shutting down your build servers when not in use.
And second and most important there’s action. After knowing your problems it’s time to create new solutions to solve our world’s toughest problems. Of course I’m talking about the…
In the past few years the Imagine Cup theme has included the environment; in France 2008 it was the main theme, and since then it’s included in the competition theme as a part of the 8 Millennium Development Goals.
We’ve been trying to do our part for the environment – both Ecologger and KnoWorld were very successful in IC08 and IC09, respectively. Now it’s your time! Create your winning solution in one of the five categories (Software Design, Game Design, Digital Media, Embedded Development and IT Challenge) or in one of the awards (TBA…) and get your chance to go to Poland and change the world in the process!

Now in the final days in the Imagine Cup Mashup competition, we’d like to invite everyone to know more about our world through KnoWorld! Our idea is to build a library of interesting Mashups and visualizations for everyone to use. With your creativity and data from more than 200 world indicators, you can help us reach the UN MDGs through your mashups!

KnoWorld – Know your world to transform it 12/4/09

This graph shows the CO2 emissions in the US over the 20th century. Now, an intriguing question: why did the emissions rate decrease sharply just when it was at its peak?
To answer this question, we present you KnoWorld – our Imagine Cup ‘09 project in the Mashup category.
KnoWorld is a system that allows you to easily access and analyze world data such as GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita or Infant Mortality Rates. With our project, you can visualize all these data through graphs and maps and compare them with actual events to analyze their causes and consequences. Make innovative conclusions and transform your world!
The main idea is to be able to mark a graph of an indicator with related events and easily identify what’s their impact on the trend. So let’s try it out with our initial question…

Here we compared the CO2 indicator with a list of environmental events from Wikipedia, and then we can see by 1973 the highest peak followed by a noticeable fall, as we noted before. Now we can click on the event on that year, which shows the Iraq oil embargo. There we have it! We were able to find a probable cause of an uncommon change in trends, by using KnoWorld.
This may seem like a rather simple case, but many other out-of-the-box relationships can be made using these visualizations. Besides, KnoWorld supports many other visualizations, like colored maps, displaying flags, bar and line charts, and so on.
What else can I do with KnoWorld?
To show some of the power of KnoWorld and other possibilities, we’ve created some other sample mashups to discover interesting facts about the world.
Ever wondered how wars have impacted the population of France?
And what’s the situation of primary education around the globe?
And who are the countries that import most arms?
Now you can take your conclusions. And these are only 4 from more than 200 indicators that you can access with KnoWorld! To see the full list of indicators, please refer to http://tinyurl.com/gap-ind.
There are thousands of people who could benefit of this project: imagine having a geography class with interactive maps showing indicators about the subject. Or a history class in which we study trends in our country and see how the historical events changed them. Or even an NGO or company could use KnoWorld to help plan their next social actions more efficiently.

Faça sua parte pelo mundo – Imagine! Blog Action Day 2008 15/10/08

Após 2 meses e meio de pausa, a ocasião me trouxe de volta à ativa!
Estou aqui blogando diretamente de Lille, França para honrar minha participação no Blog Action Day 2008 – Poverty, como sempre tentando passar a mensagem para vocês.
E dessa vez não podia ser mais relevante. Nosso mundo está numa situação caótica, ainda pior com a crise financeira mundial, e infelizmente isso costuma acabae num aumento da pobreza. O Blog Action Day, por coincidência, escolheu um tema que agora está sendo bem debatido, e é muito interessante ver os blogs do mundo se reunindo para reagir e criar idéias contra isso.
E como você pode ajudar a lutar contra a pobreza e desigualdade no mundo com a tecnologia?
(Acho que vocês já sabem a resposta…)
Pois é, parece que o tema da Imagine Cup coincidiu em cheio com o do Blog Action Day de novo… (vide 2007)
A Imagine Cup nesse ano vem com o tema “Imagine um mundo onde a tecnologia ajuda a resolver os problemas mais difíceis que estamos enfrentando”, trazendo como guia as 8 metas do milênio da ONU:
- Erradicar a pobreza extrema e a fome
- Atingir o ensino básico universal
- Promover a igualdade entre os sexos e a autonomia das mulheres
- Reduzir a mortalidade infantil
- Melhorar a saúde materna
- Combater o HIV/AIDS, a malária e outras doenças
- Garantir a sustentabilidade ambiental
- Estabelecer uma parceria mundial para o desenvolvimento
E claro que a pobreza é certamente um dos problemas mais difíceis atualmente, piorando e aumentando com o abismo social.
A competição continua com 9 categorias, possibilitando que você inove com a tecnologia, seja com uma série de fotos, um mashup ou um sistema de software.

Blog Action Day: Mudando o mundo, um passo de cada vez 15/10/07

Hoje é o Blog Action Day, e, participando dessa iniciativa, me propus a postar sobre o meio ambiente.
Não é novidade para ninguém (espero) que nosso meio ambiente está sofrendo. A cada dia mais catástrofes ambientais estão acontecendo, variações climáticas de 20 graus em 2 dias aqui em São Paulo, secas recordes em diversos lugares, gente morrendo de frio, calor e doenças respiratórias, os Tsunamis e Katrinas. Acho que falar disso é chover no molhado.
O que eu quero enfatizar hoje é o fato que há solução para isso, há pessoas trabalhando nisso, e você também pode fazer sua parte.
Primeiro, uma notícia que mostra a importância do problema para a vida de todos: os mais recentes prêmios Nobel da Paz foram ninguem menos que Al Gore e o IPCC, por trabalharem pela divulgação do problema e criação das bases das medidas necessárias para sua solução (mais em http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2007/ ). Ou seja, a comunidade política e científica reconhece que os problemas ambientais são de grande importância, não só para a ciência, mas para a PAZ do planeta!
[Se você quer saber o que levou um político ambientalista a ganhar o Nobel da Paz, assista Uma Verdade Inconveniente, o documentário do Al Gore sobre o aquecimento global. Achei um pouco político demais, mas tem um panorama bem científico e ao mesmo tempo fácil de entender do problema todo. Recomendado!]
Há hoje muitas ONGs e empresas com iniciativas bem legais para o meio ambiente. Por exemplo, a Microsoft já tomou algumas iniciativas muito legais para ajudar a divulgar o problema e financiar ONGs que estão empenhadas em resolvê-lo.
Dou destaque para duas grandes ações (já postei sobre elas antes aqui no blog também):
Primeiro, no dia 7.7.07, tivemos o Live Earth, que foram shows simultâneos em 12 lugares (inclusive um na Antártica!), para aumentar o conhecimento dos problema e pedir para que todos tomassem uma ação (Veja a lista completa de shows em http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Earth ).
A segunda foi a campanha i’m, que eu participo com orgulho (além do Messenger, tem um banner do lado direito do blog). Essa campanha começou com os refugiados (9million), e se estendeu para diversas organizações, inclusive a StopGlobalWarming.org , que combate o aquecimento global. Para participar é muito fácil: é só colocar em algum lugar do seu nick do Windows Live Messenger a palavra *help (asterisco help), e pronto! Cada vez que você começar uma conversa, a Microsoft doará para a StopGlobalWarming.org uma quantia em dinheiro. Já foram mais de US$96.000,00 desde março de 2007!
Bom, já dá pra ver o quanto esse problema é importante, e como estão batalhando contra ele. Mas e você? O que você pode fazer com a tecnologia que você estuda para o meio ambiente?

Primeiramente desculpem pela falta de posts freqüentes. Afinal, faltar 3 semanas na facu, recuperar toda a matéria e blogar ao mesmo tempo é trabalho de super-homem!
Estou fazendo este post só para anunciar que me juntei à causa do Blog Action Day e postarei no dia 15 de Outubro algo sobre o meio ambiente. O objetivo é simples: espalhar a causa e quem sabe até juntar algumas doações.

“Imagine um mundo onde a tecnologia possibilita um ambiente sustentável”. Esse tema vai quebrar a cabeça de muita gente, com foco agora na FRANÇA!
Tenho certeza que o Brasil vai detonar no ano que vem, como vem fazendo todo ano. E para esse tema, nada mais coerente, visto que temos a maior reserva de agua potavel do mundo, grandes florestas, e muitos problemas ambientais.
